Rules for imported chicken remain untouched

Published November 24, 2014

Following Restaurants Canada action, the foodservice quota and eligibility rules for imported chicken remain untouched for the coming year. Additionally, foodservice companies that own a processing facility can now access imported chicken – an important crack in supply management. This change enables members to cost-effectively extend their brands into the retail sector.

Proposed measures
As Canadian chicken prices are among the highest in the world, demand for imported chicken is at record levels. To protect supply management, the government had considered reducing import levels and raising eligibility requirements this past summer. Restaurants Canada successfully lobbied against these measures as they would significantly hurt our members.

While the restaurant industry emerged unscathed, several other sectors lost the right for continued chicken imports. Restaurants Canada thanked the government and Minister Ed Fast for considering our members’ needs.
