Chicken industry to reduce antimicrobial use

Published September 7, 2017

Chicken Farmers of Canada (CFC) has set timelines to further eliminate the preventive use of antimicrobials of relevance to human medicine.

CFC plans to eliminate the preventive use of:

  • Category II antimicrobials by the end of 2018; and
  • Category III antibiotics by the end of 2020 (depending on a reassessment at the end of 2019).

CFC will continue the responsible use of antibiotics for therapeutic purposes and the use of ionophores (antimicrobials not used in human medicine).
