(Oct. 30/13) CRFA is working to soften the blow of Michael Prue’s single-line tipping bill in the event it gets passed. Prue’s Bill 49 bans employers from receiving a share of staff tips, and will be under consideration again this November.
In talks with Labour Minister Yasir Naqvi, we called for a number of technical changes to the bill to avoid unintended consequences for shift managers and small businesses. We want the bill to:
use the Ministry of Labour’s definition of “employer” to prevent managers from falling under the legislation;
provide an exemption for a tip-sharing pool; and
exempt employers who work as staff.
Minister Naqvi positively received our requests and committed to continue working on this issue.
