Edmonton restaurateur elected chair of Restaurants Canada

Restaurants Canada (formerly CRFA) is pleased to announce that Patrick Saurette, owner/operator of The Marc restaurant in Edmonton, is the new Chair of the Board for 2018-2019.  He was elected at the association’s annual meeting today.

Saurette and his wife and business partner Doris opened The Marc in 2010, a small French bistro that has received many awards and has been on several best restaurant lists.

As Chair of Restaurants Canada, Saurette will oversee one of the country’s largest trade associations, representing 30,000 businesses in an industry that directly employs more than 1.2 million Canadians and serves over 18 million customers daily.

“As an independent restaurateur, Patrick will bring tremendous value to the association,” says Shanna Munro, president and CEO of Restaurants Canada.  “With his leadership, we are in good hands to continue to extend the reach, relevance and impact of Restaurants Canada across the country on behalf of our members.”

Much like one in five youths today, Saurette started working in the hospitality business at age 16, working with a catering company serving small family gatherings, huge corporate events and a ton of weddings.

He worked in many independent restaurants in Edmonton, Toronto and Kelowna through the years. His on-the-job training was a daily apprenticeship from the many European-trained mentors who imparted their love and respect of hospitality every day.  He considers chef Claude Buzon to be an early mentor.

In 1993 he started with il Portico Restaurant Group where he became an operating partner and helped build an Edmonton institution.  When the group sold the property and closed the restaurant in 2008, Saurette and his wife decided to open The Marc.

“Restaurants feed the soul of our country with great hospitality,” says Saurette.  “When we work together, we can all share in making our business better, stronger and more resilient.”

Saurette first joined the Restaurants Canada Board of Directors in 2008 and is one of 30 Directors from across Canada.  These industry leaders volunteer their time for the betterment of Canada’s restaurant and foodservice industry.
