Express Entry Program Promises to Alleviate Labour Shortage

Published October 24, 2014

The federal government’s “Express Entry” program, which opens on Jan. 1, 2015, could help members who are looking to hire cooks, chefs and foodservice managers.

What is Express Entry?
Express Entry is a new electronic system that manages applications for permanent residence in certain economic programs. Applicants fill out an online profile, and Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) then invites certain candidates to apply for permanent residence and processes their applications within six months.

How does it help restaurateurs?

The initiative could help restaurateurs looking to hire cooks, chefs and foodservice managers, as skill levels A, B and O of the National Occupational Classification (“NOC”) system are exempt from quotas. Currently, cooks and foodservice managers are not permitted in the Canadian Experience Class stream, and are capped in the Canadian Federal Trades stream. Caps will be removed from all streams with Express Entry. Candidates looking to enter Canada to work as cooks, chefs or foodservice managers will be evaluated by the government on their skills, education, experience, and language ability. A valid job offer from a Canadian employer almost guarantees a path to permanent residency.

Tools for members
Restaurants Canada will soon release a members-only guide to using Express Entry. In the meantime, read more about this new initiative on Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s website.
