Express Entry Program updates

Published August 18, 2015

(Aug. 18/15) Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has issued its mid-year report on the Express Entry program. This program exempts skill levels A, B and O of the National Occupational Classification (NOC) system from quotas. Going forward, the caps for cooks and chefs will no longer apply, since these positions are both rated skill level B.

The good news is the score needed to apply for permanent residency is lower than expected.  The lowest draw score so far has been 451.  Once the program is finalized, CIC expects the cut-off for restaurant applicants to settle in the 300-450 range.  (An Express Entry candidate with a job offer is automatically awarded 600 points.) Foreign workers who have a restaurant job offer with an employer holding an approved Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) application should apply for permanent residency.

The program is still in its trial period. CIC will provide a full review of the program at year’s end, including the number of successful candidates in the restaurant industry.
In the meantime, if you have an approved LMIA, you are encouraged to apply on behalf of the foreign cooks, chefs and food service managers you’d like to hire.  The odds of success appear to be in your favour.
We’d like to hear about your experience with Express Entry. If you have comments you’d like to share, please send them to rhall@restaurantscanada.org.
