Federal funding now available for energy-saving projects

Publié juillet 28, 2019

Businesses in the four provinces where the federal price on greenhouse gas emissions is in effect can now apply to the Small-and Medium-sized Enterprises Project stream of the Canadian government’s Climate Action Incentive Fund.

Over the next five years, small-and-medium-sized businesses in New Brunswick, Ontario, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan will have access to funding to support actions to increase the energy efficiency of their operations. This funding comes from a portion of the fuel-charge revenue from the federal government’s price on greenhouse gas emissions in these four provinces.

The following funding will be awarded for SME projects from 2019-2020:

  • $72,400,000 in Ontario
  • $21,300,000 in Saskatchewan
  • $9,300,000 in Manitoba
  • $3,700,000 in New Brunswick

The SME project stream opened for applications on July 17, 2019 and will remain open for 90 days or until the funding for this round has been exhausted.

Applications will be processed quickly and a final decision on funding for individual projects will be made as early as the beginning of fall for submissions made in early August.

What does this mean for foodservice?

Eligible businesses can now receive funding for up to 25 per cent of the cost of projects to reduce energy use, save money and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

As a member of the federal government’s External Advisory Committee for the Climate Action Incentive Fund, Restaurants Canada made sure that funding would be available for projects that would benefit the foodservice and hospitality sector. As a result, funding is available for a wide range of eligible projects, including:

Applicants can submit up to five applications for individual projects using the same business number.

Grants will be awarded to incorporated entities within the range of $20,000-$250,000. The total sum requested by the same applicant cannot exceed the maximum funding cap of $250,000 in each eligible province. For applicants that have a franchise agreement with a franchisor, the $250,000 funding cap will apply to the group of applicant franchisees who operate under the same franchise trade name in each eligible province.

How can businesses apply for funding?

The first step is to create a GC Key.

Once the key is created, the second step is to provide an email address and complete a user profile to get access to the Low Carbon Economy Fund.

The third and last step is to access the program by clicking on “Climate Change Funding Programs”.

Technical help and support is available at ec.gigu-swim.ec@canada.ca, and webinars and tutorials should be available shortly.
