We expect Canada to announce countermeasures in response, following a short consultation with different industries.

We are working to mitigate any further impacts on our sector. In response to this evolving issue, we created a working group with industry and supply chain experts to aid us in our approach. This gives us direct access to valuable industry information and specifics. We are also participating in the Canada-US Trade Council (CUSTC), a voluntary coming together of Canadian business leaders, labour organizations, and public officials to share intelligence, and ideas and collaborate on strategies to navigate the risk of tariffs and the subsequent review of CUSMA. Today’s meeting with the council included our U.S. ambassador, further strengthening our position. The CUSTC regularly features Jean Charet, James Moore, and Deputy Finance Minister Forbes. Based on the meeting today Friday, January 31st there is a lot of work being done on the ground in Washington by our Ambassador, Minister Joly and others from the PM’s team. The discussions of the council do

provide us with valuable information that is helpful to understand how to frame our asks.

We are asking the government not to impose tariffs on food in general. Our message is clear: food is special, because it is essential, and often perishable. Putting tariffs on food will likely push inflation up again. In our discussions with the government, our priority items to be exempt from tariffs are food and food paper packaging, along with flagging concerns about building supplies and equipment.

We have been actively engaged with all key ministers, with a particular focus on Premier Ford, Premier Smith, and Premier Eby, as well as directly with Ministers Melanie Joly, Dominic LeBlanc, and Mary Ng, along with the Prime Minister’s office. At this point, there has been no indication of the specific retaliation list Canada is developing. Please see the full list of items from the last tariff battle here.

The government is also developing a plan to help Canadians and businesses in these difficult times. We have urged the government to prioritize job retention in its support for Canadians,

drawing from successful strategies implemented during the pandemic. Providing direct support helps protect Canadian workers, sustain businesses, and reduce the strain on vital community services such as food banks. This approach ensures resilience in the face of economic challenges, and a faster recovery once these tariffs are behind us.

We have also reached out to Premiers in every province, to make sure they are aware of our industry’s concerns and priorities. Finally, we have made the case that the timing is right to improve interprovincial trade, as it shouldn’t be harder to trade within Canada than with the US. This would allow us to improve productivity and grow our economy significantly.

Next steps

We will keep you informed on this issue as it develops, and we analyze the impacts of US-led tariffs and Canadian retaliatory measures on the food service industry. The reality is this is an evolving issue that will dramatically change our diplomatic relationship with the U.S. for some time.

We invite you to join our upcoming webinar on Tuesday, February 18 (registration links will be sent in the coming days), where industry experts will break down the details of these tariffs and their potential impact on your business. We will also discuss advocacy efforts and strategies to navigate these challenges.

We will continue to keep you updated and advocate on your behalf. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
