Health Canada bans artificially produced trans fat

Published April 20, 2017

(Apr. 20/17) Health Canada has quietly published its plan to eliminate partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) from Canada’s food supply. The government acknowledged the food industry’s success in voluntarily reducing trans fat, but plans to completely eliminate the few products that contain artificially produced trans fat.

PHOs are now on Part 1 of the List of Contaminants and Other Adulterating Substances in Foods. This means the sale of any food containing PHOs would be prohibited under the Food and Drug Act.

When does the ban take effect?

This trans fat ban was part of the Liberal government’s election platform. The government is allowing for comments until June 21 and a transition period of a year. The ban will likely take effect next summer.

Restaurants have been quick to act

Restaurants Canada was part of the Trans Fat Task Force, which called for a regulatory framework to eliminate trans fat from the food supply in 2009. The restaurant industry was quick to remove trans fat from menu products, following the release of the Trans Fat Task Force report.
