Sodium reduction is a key component of Health Canada’s mandate and they are turning their attention to the foodservice sector. They have put out a consultation document for restaurant and foodservice operators across Canada. The purpose is to gather information about current practices and gain an understanding of the sodium reduction resources currently available to foodservice operators. The survey touches on menu labeling and awareness of existing sodium targets. The survey will also be sent to food manufacturers and distributors with questions on how they are supplying restaurants with sodium-reduced products. This online survey is open until Nov. 20 and you are encouraged to participate.
Health Canada also hopes to have a foodservice roundtable next March after which they will be developing sodium targets for the foodservice industry.
