High heels and dress codes: What you need to know

Published March 24, 2017

(Mar 24/17) A private member’s bill in B.C. to prohibit requirements for women to wear high heels in bars and restaurants received much attention across Canada.

The bill sought to “prevent employers from requiring setting varying footwear and other requirements based on gender expression or gender identity. As a result, for example this act would prevent employers from requiring employees to wear high heeled shoes.”

The bill died on the order paper on March 16, but it received support in principle by MLAs from all three parties, including Premier Christy Clark.

Restaurants Canada reviewed this issue with WorkSafeBC and explained that our members have proactively made changes to their dress code policies, and are proud of their efforts to create inclusive, safe and respectful workplaces.
