How you can support the next generation of foodservice at the CHF Gala?

Publié février 13, 2020

In the third quarter of 2019, there were a record 67,370 job vacancies in Canada’s foodservice industry. This statistic may come as a shock to some, but for owners/operators, the foodservice labour shortage is all too real.

Going beyond the stats, you only need to speak to any Canadian foodservice owner/operator to get an understanding of just how much the labour shortage is impacting the industry. Operators have explained that they are unable to expand their business, or are required to close up shop during peak hours, solely because they are lacking the necessary staff.

Restaurants Canada is proud to partner with the Canadian Hospitality Foundation (CHF). The CHF is a registered charity who provides scholarships to students who wish to enter the Foodservice and Hospitality industry. Together with industry, the CHF and Restaurants Canada are working with Hospitality Schools from across Canada to develop scholarship and mentorship programs that enhance engagement of students with the aim to build lifelong careers within Foodservice and Hospitality.

Restaurants Canada believes that an integral part of the solution to this labour shortage is in educating the future manpower and changing the perception of our industry as a transitory vocation.

CHF scholarship recipient Hayley from the Hospitality and Tourism Management program at Red River College echoes this sentiment by stating, “What this scholarship means to me is; I can follow my dream and reach my fullest potential in the hospitality industry and succeed in the workforce.”

Lindsey, a Mount Saint Vincent University student in the Tourism and Hospitality Management program agrees, explaining: “While scholarships like the one I have received show that there are people backing students that choose this industry, these scholarships have also made it easier for people to follow their passions and venture into the hospitality industry.”

The partnership between Restaurants Canada and the Canadian Hospitality Foundation provides a first step towards a unified voice to attract and retain multi-generational talent for our industry.

Restaurants Canada CEO, Shanna Munro emphasizes the importance of this partnership stating, “In order to continue to advance and protect our industry, our one and only key sustainable advantage is our people. The foodservice and hospitality industry offers a variety of life long careers to students across our great nation. Our collaboration means that together, we not only continue to educate and encourage our future leaders, but we begin to foster their growth in order that they may raise Canada’s foodservice and hospitality landscape to a new level.

We are STRONGER TOGETHER!

On February 29th, 2020, our community has the opportunity to show up, and show support for the next generation of foodservice at the CHF Red Door Benefit Gala at Hotel X Toronto.

Tickets are now available for purchase, so reserve your seat now.

This support from the industry itself provides the encouragement and confidence for that individual to make it to the industry’s door. The benefit gala will introduce the Red Door Scholarship Program. This program will support and mentor passionate and dedicated individuals who desire to make the hospitality and foodservice industry a life-long career choice. With relevant externship, mentorship and placement post-graduation, we are looking to build this scholarship into the most sought after program in our industry. We can’t do this alone – it will need all industry to come together to help make this happen.

Uniting, we are able to provide a stronger voice as we continue to lobby our government for an improved labour policy to ensure that operators, like yourselves, can flourish and grow. We can’t wait to see you at the Red Door Gala this February.
