On October 5, the BC Government announced the BC Fair Wages Commission participants confirming that the Commission would consist of a three-person panel consisting of a business representative (Ken Peacock, BC Business Council), a labour representative (Ivan Limpright, United Food and Commercial Workers Union) and a neutral chairperson (Marjorie Griffen Cohen, professor and economist at Simon Fraser University). Marjorie Griffen Cohen was also instrumental in establishing the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives and served as its first chair.
On October 31, the BC Fair Wages Commission launched its consultation website. The website outlines the Commission’s terms of reference along with ways that stakeholders and interested British Columbians can provide their input into how and when BC’s minimum wage should reach . The Commission has set a number of dates for regional meetings asking those interested in presenting their views to the Commission during one of the meetings to register in advance. The Commission has also set a deadline of December 7 for receiving written submissions, which should be no longer than five pages in length.
Restaurants Canada will make a presentation to the Fair Wages Commission at 4:15 p.m. on November 23 at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver. Restaurants Canada encourages BC members to register to present at one of the regional meetings and provide the Commission with written feedback by the December 7 date.
