Dairy prices could increase on Feb. 1

Published November 6, 2019

Restaurant operators could see increases in the price of dairy products next year.

In October 2019, the Canadian Dairy Commission conducted a review of farm gate milk prices and various other costs used in administering the supply management system. According to a statement released on Nov. 1, a number of changes will be made following this review, which will take effect on Feb. 1, 2020.

What will this mean for foodservice?

The impact of these adjustments on retail prices will depend on many factors, such as manufacturing, transportation, distribution and packaging costs throughout the supply chain. However, it should be noted that the consumer price index for dairy products has risen by only 1.6 per cent since 2014, whereas the index for food in general has risen by 11.2 per cent.

What’s next?

Restaurants Canada will continue to work with the Canadian Dairy Commission to improve access to dairy products and affordability for consumers.
