Nova Scotia plans to join a number of other provinces placing restrictions on single-use plastic bags.
The province’s majority Liberal government introduced legislation on Sept. 26 that will ban single-use plastic bags at restaurants and other businesses.
Once the legislation is passed, industry will have one year to prepare before the bags are prohibited.
There will be no requirement to charge a fee for alternatives to plastic bags, leaving the choice to business operators.
The proposed legislation will also give government the power to restrict other types of single-use plastic items without going through the provincial legislature.
Next steps
Restaurants Canada is scheduled to appear before Nova Scotia’s Law Amendments Committee on this legislation and will continue to monitor its progression.
