Nova Scotia reduces burden on businesses with changes to food safety regulations

Publié août 6, 2020

The Government of Nova Scotia has made the following changes to the province’s food safety regulations to reduce the burden on businesses while continuing to safeguard the health and safety of consumers:

  • The seasonal food safety permit has been extended from four months to six months, with no increase to the fee. This change means seasonal food safety permit holders save $120 a year from the cost of a full-year permit.
  • The late fee for food safety permit holders has now been eliminated.
  • Bed and breakfast operators are now exempted from food hygiene training.
  • Clarification has been added to make it clear that:
    • only foodservice businesses that produce and sell baked goods to retail stores must have a specific permit for these activities; and
    • only foodservice businesses that produce and sell food with meat or cream fillings at a farmers’ market must have a specific permit for these activities.

These changes were made based on input gathered during consultations with Restaurants Canada and other industry stakeholders in 2018 and are effective immediately.
