Ontario to Enhance Local Food Access

Published July 18, 2019

Good news for foodservice operators who rely on the Ontario Food Terminal: The facility isn’t going anywhere and is even getting some upgrades.

Terminal is staying put

After early findings from an ongoing review revealed the advantages of its current location, the provincial government has confirmed that the facility will continue to operate out of South Etobicoke.

“We spoke with everyone who uses the facility: farmers, buyers, distributors, consumers, and restaurant owners and they all agreed our agri-food sector is best served by working to improve the Ontario Food Terminal at its current location,” said Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Ernie Hardeman in a statement released on July 8.

Improvements on the horizon

The Toronto Wholesale Produce Association also announced, that working with the government, it will make a significant investment to modernize the Ontario Food Terminal with a focus on the Farmer’s Market.

As the review of the Ontario Food Terminal continues, the government has stated it will be looking to “capitalize on modern food distribution systems, infrastructure enhancements for Ontario farmers, and promotion of local food that keeps pace with consumer demand.”

As reported by iPolitics, the 1.7 million square foot facility — which is the main produce distribution centre in the Toronto area and the largest facility of its kind in Canada — may be receiving enhancements that include “more enclosures for trucks parked in front of unloading docks, as well as an enhanced web presence.”
