Prince Edward Island’s minimum wage will increase by 15 cents to $13 per hour on April 1, 2021.
Restaurants Canada commends the P.E.I. government for keeping the increase to a level that restaurants will be able to manage amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Every year, the P.E.I. Employment Standards Board reviews the Island’s minimum wage and provides a recommendation to government. The board’s 2020 report is available at: https://www.princeedwardisland.ca/en/information/economic-growth-tourism-and-culture/minimum-wage-order-board-and-lodging
Restaurants Canada delivered a presentation to the board in September, which recommended a minimum wage freeze for the rest of the pandemic, and to link minimum wage increases to an economic indicator, such as the consumer price index, in the future. The presentation also recommended creating a wage differential for liquor servers going forward, in recognition of their capacity to earn a higher income through tips.
