Quebec launches major red tape reduction initiative

Publié décembre 9, 2019

The Quebec government has launched a largescale initiative to reduce unnecessary red tape restraining the growth of businesses across the province.

The initiative will involve extensive consultation with industry under the oversight of MNA Youri Chassin, who has been a strong champion for Quebec’s small-and-medium-sized businesses since his election to the National Assembly in the 2018.

As detailed in an official statement released on Dec. 3, the government has set the following targets for this initiative:

  • A 10 per cent reduction in the number of administrative procedures, with an aim to return to a level similar to what businesses faced in 2004.
  • A 15 per cent reduction in the volume of paperwork resulting from administrative procedures, which should reduce the total number of documents produced by 5.4 million each year.
  • A 20 per cent decrease in the cost of administrative procedures, which should generate annual savings of $200 million for businesses operating in Quebec.

The government has also shared plans to introduce legislation that would require an existing administrative procedure be removed every time a new one is put in place.

What will this mean for foodservice?

Thanks to the efforts of Restaurants Canada, foodservice has been identified as one of the priority sectors to be targeted by this initiative.

After working together to streamline the province’s liquor licensing regime over the last few years, the government is looking forward to replicating this success in other areas.

What’s next?

The Quebec government is inviting input until Feb. 28, which will then be analyzed for the development of an action plan to be released later in 2020.

Over the next few months, Restaurants Canada will reach out to our Quebec membership to ensure we are sufficiently representing their interests as the government consultation process unfolds.
