Quebec launches province-wide offensive to tackle worker shortages

Published January 25, 2019

Just a few months after taking office, Quebec Labour Minister Jean Boulet has launched a major initiative to help businesses struggling due to the province’s growing worker shortage. As of Jan. 21, more than 200 designated advisors from the labour department have been tasked to work directly with businesses across the province to help them fill vacancies. (Read the labour minister’s statement announcing the launch of the program.)

The objectives of this initiative are to integrate the greatest number of people into the labour market, modernize the current workforce, adequately prepare future workers, and increase business productivity.

This is an ongoing initiative that will be closely monitored as it is implemented so that the labour department can be as responsive as possible to the needs of the province’s business community.

Restaurants Canada welcomes this move as a step in the right direction. The association has long been calling on all levels of government to gain a better understanding of the regional and local challenges that foodservice operators are facing and take a more proactive approach to helping them meet their labour needs.

This new initiative represents a paradigm shift for the Quebec government: Instead of focusing on helping workers find employment, this approach focuses on helping employers find workers.

Restaurants Canada has met with the labour minister’s staff to ensure that the needs of our industry will be addressed. We will be collaborating with the labour department to help identify regional and local challenges specific to the foodservice sector. We look forward to seeing businesses benefit from this initiative so that they can continue to contribute to vibrant, dynamic communities.
