Restaurants Canada joins advisory panels on key issues in Alberta

Publié septembre 3, 2019

Over the summer months, Restaurants Canada was pleased to receive invitations from the new government in Alberta to provide representation on two panels examining key issues of importance for the foodservice community:

  • Red Tape Reduction: Restaurants Canada Board Member Leslie Echino, owner of Blink Restaurant & Bar in Calgary, has joined a number of other industry stakeholders on a tourism and hospitality panel appointed by Alberta’s associate minister of red tape reduction. This panel will provide direct feedback to the associate minister on ways to reduce red tape for businesses in the tourism and hospitality sector.
  • Minimum Wage: Mark von Schellwitz, Restaurants Canada Vice President, Western Canada, was appointed to a panel of industry experts and professionals who will assess Alberta’s minimum wage. The panel will provide an objective analysis of the impact that the previous government’s $15 minimum wage policy has had on economic growth and employment across the province. The panel will also be looking into the merits of re-establishing a liquor server wage, should it be determined that liquor servers are better off with the liquor server wage than without it. A report with the panel’s recommendations is expected to be delivered in January 2020.

The voice of foodservice continues to be heard loud and clear

Restaurants Canada appreciates these opportunities to provide government with direct input on ways to improve operational realities for foodservice businesses. This builds on actions already taken by Alberta’s new leadership to improve conditions for restaurateurs as part of its job creation agenda.

Within its first 100 days since taking office in April, the new government passed Bill 2: An Act to Make Alberta Open for Business, which acted on many of the recommendations that Restaurants Canada put forward during the provincial election campaign. This legislation, combined with the new Job Creation Student Wage that came into effect on June 26, has provided welcome relief for foodservice businesses following recent setbacks.
