Protecting N.B. restaurateurs from more WCB rate increases

Published May 16, 2017

Restaurants Canada is still pushing the New Brunswick government to put the brakes on skyrocketing Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB) assessment premiums. Restaurateurs are alarmed by the dramatic 75% increase in assessment premiums over the past three years – from $0.75 to $1.31 per $100 of payroll, between 2015 and 2017. This spike is mostly due to legislative changes, such as a new independent appeal tribunal that can make policies.

The latest wins
On May 4, the government announced it would appoint an independent panel to review further legislative changes. It also asked the Auditor General to conduct a value-for-money audit of WorkSafeNB. The government has told WorkSafeNB to freeze assessment rates due to the pending reviews.

Our efforts
Restaurants Canada and the business community convinced the government to introduce changes in December to help cut costs. However, we are still concerned WCB rates could climb, and will keep up the pressure on the government.
