Restaurants are playing an essential role as part of Canada’s response to COVID-19. At the same time, these mostly small and medium-sized businesses are being devastated by this crisis.
By the end of March, nearly one out of 10 respondents to a Restaurants Canada survey said they’d already permanently shut down at least one of their locations.
Another 18 per cent said they might have to permanently close within a month if conditions don’t improve.
The vast majority of those still managing to stay open for takeout and delivery are struggling to do so — and should be commended for their efforts. These businesses are playing an essential role for healthcare workers, first responders, truckers, essential service workers and those in self-isolation.
Working with a number of key industry players, Restaurants Canada is proud to show support for Canadian restaurants doing their part to stay open during these difficult times with #TakeoutDay, launching April 15, 2020.
From April 15 onward, every Wednesday is now #TakeoutDay!
To kick off this campaign, we invite you to join in the celebration with Canada’s Great Kitchen Party – Home Edition!
On April 22 at 8:00 p.m. ET, an epic variety show will take place on Facebook live with Canada Take Out. It will feature musical entertainment from Canada’s top talent and celebrated athletes. Headliners will include Jim Cuddy, Alan Doyle, Ed Robertson, Barney Bentall and Tom Cochrane. Friends and family can enjoy dinner and a concert together virtually and do their part to help restaurants on #TakeoutDay.
