Toronto calls for earlier liquor service hours

Publié mars 18, 2019

In a submission to the Ontario government, Restaurants Canada has asked the province to allow licensed restaurants to serve alcohol earlier, following its decision to extend hours for retail alcohol sales. In December 2018, the Ford government announced that all LCBO and Beer Store locations, as well as authorized grocery stores, could sell alcohol from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week.

Toronto city council passed a motion on Feb. 26 supporting the call for extended service hours for licensed restaurants.

Paula Fletcher, of Ward 14 Toronto-Danforth, put forward a motion calling on the city to ask the provincial government to allow restaurants to begin serving alcohol two hours earlier on weekends. The motion, titled “Putting the Mimosa Back in Brunch,” passed 18-8.

While most operations would not be affected by this change, it would be a great boon to those restaurants who cater to a brunch crowd. It is often a point of confusion from customers that they cannot enjoy an alcoholic beverage with their meal until 11 a.m., particularly in tourist areas where restrictive hours seem antiquated to visitors.
