(May 25/15) Re:Sound and SOCAN (Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) have stepped up efforts to grow revenue. As a result, some members have reported that they’ve been invoiced for tariffs that do not apply to them.

Note, these two organizations are legitimate and their mandate is to ensure royalty fees are paid when copyrighted music plays in restaurants and other businesses. However, if you’re approached by either company for the first time about a tariff, make sure the representative clearly explains why and how it applies to you. Be certain that you understand the tariffs you are assessed for. If you have questions, ask to review the information and for some time to do so. The most common tariffs that apply to restaurants are 3A, 15A, and 18.
