Montreal is on the cusp of updating its municipal rules and regulations for food trucks. This decision is welcomed by the city’s street restaurateurs and the Quebec Street Restaurant Association.
Some of the changes could include:
The committee that selects trucks on a case by case basis be abolished
More flexibility in site selection and allocation
Flat rates for rental space fees
Less paperwork and red tape
Street restaurateurs could also see a point system go into effect. Applicants will fill out forms and points be awarded points on various aspects on each vendor’s business, including:
The use of fresh and local ingredients
Home cooked meals
Meals that are $7 or less
Using containers made of recycled, recyclable or biodegradable materials
The point system could also help vendors receive preferential site selection
Last year’s least profitable sites have been abandoned while several new ones that could be better for business and foot traffic have been added, for a total of 30 sites in the city.
A permit to operate a food truck in Montreal is $300.
Montreal’s city councillors will vote on these proposed changes in this month. If approved, they will go into effect in April 2018.
