(Nov. 27/13) The Ministry of Labour has announced new regulations on occupational health and safety training to take effect July 1, 2014.
The new rules
This regulation requires employers to give basic safety training to employees. Ministry officials have told us the regulations are not onerous, and most members will already meet these standards through their existing training.
Employees and supervisors can complete the new health and safety awareness training through a one-hour tutorial, either individually or in groups, with free, online e-learning tools or hard copy workbooks. On completion, an employee will receive a certificate that is valid for the remainder of his or her career. The printed training materials are available in nine languages.
Workplaces that have provided similar training to employees will not need to participate, as long as the previous training meets the minimum requirements of the new regulation.
