Nova Scotia restaurants invited to apply for student mentorship program

Published May 6, 2021

Foodservice businesses in Nova Scotia with Red Seal Cooks or Bakers on staff are invited to participate in Serve it Up! — a culinary career exploration program that connects high school co-op students with mentors in the industry.

The intent of the Serve it Up! program is to increase the number of youth apprentices in the culinary trade and to provide the sector with skilled and professional workers.

The program, created by the Nova Scotia Tourism Human Resource Council, the Department of Education, and the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency, is designed for employers who are interested in hiring a high school student in a paid, culinary position for at least 200 hours during the summer (July/August 2021). This is an invaluable experience for students, providing them with a deeper awareness of the culinary careers and opportunities in the province.

In preparation for summer employment and prior to their coop placement, students will receive basic culinary training, as well as WHMIS, Occupational Health & Safety, and Food Handlers training. Securing a summer placement will depend on the student applications received from schools in your region.

Any foodservice business operators who would like to participate in the program, or receive further information, may complete the Serve It Up! 2021 Employer Application Form or contact Serve it Up! Co-ordinator Ainsley Bartram at ainsley@tourism.ca or (902) 300-7286.
