The Ontario government has released its long-awaited regulations on the Healthy Menu Choices Act. Foodservice premises with 20 or more locations in Ontario that sell prepared, ready-to-eat food will be required to post calories on menus as of Jan. 1, 2017.

Most of the regulations follow the recommendations we made in our presentations to the ministry, including exemptions for seasonal menu items, and a wide scope for calorie testing options.

We were disappointed that the government chose to include flyers, advertising, and online products in the definition of menu, which significantly expands the original intent of the legislation.

Restaurants Canada will submit a response to the regulatory posting. If you have comments or questions, please contact James Rilett, Vice President Ontario at jrilett@restaurantscanada.org.
