(Jun. 12/13) The controversial tipping bill that bans business owners and management from sharing in employee tips passed second reading on May 30. Bill 49 (previously Bill 107), Protecting Employees’ Tips Act, 2013, is NDP MPP Michael Prue’s third attempt to make this bill law in Ontario.
CRFA has met with government and Mr. Prue to discuss this bill. We will continue to work with all parties to ensure that significant changes are made to this legislation if it progresses any further.
When the bill was first introduced, we surveyed our members and found that restaurateurs hold strong but varied positions on tipping practices – a reflection of our industry’s diversity and complexity. We will use these findings to keep arguing that a one-size-fits-all solution does not work in this case.
