Parliamentary committee on industry, science and technology to review Copyright Act

Publié avril 28, 2018

On 27 March 2018, the Standing Committee on Industry, Science and Technology announced that it had adopted a work plan under which it will conduct a statutorily mandated review of the Copyright Act.

The Committee will conduct the review in three phases and hear testimony from:

  • Phase 1: Witnesses representing specific sectors of activity, including publishing, visual arts, software, and telecommunications;
  • Phase 2: Witnesses representing a range of stakeholders involved in multiple sectors of activity, and;
  • Phase 3: Legal experts, including individual lawyers and academics, along with professional associations.

The Committee will also travel across Canada in May to provide Canadians additional opportunities to express their views on copyright. It aims to complete all three phases by early 2019.

Restaurants Canada has been involved in debates, discussions, and consultations over multiple tariff issues related to copyright for several years. We are considered a valued stakeholder and will be preparing to participate in the latest round of consultations. Our goal continues to be to make the process more equitable and efficient for operators and to limit the retroactive aspect of some of the newly imposed tariffs.
