Business lunch executive people looking menu ordering meal at restaurant

(Apr. 28/15) Thanks to action by Restaurants Canada and our members, Ontario’s calorie posting legislation (Bill 45) has become more palatable for restaurateurs.

The changes

  • You’ll have more time to adjust to the rules. The government accepted Restaurants Canada’s request for a minimum of 18 months from the time the bill passes. The bill is expected to pass this June, and menus must be updated by Jan. 1, 2017.
  • Franchisors won’t be held liable for the independent actions of a franchisee who chooses not to follow the regulations.
  • Proposals to add sodium counts were defeated, which means the new rules will only apply to calories.
  • Municipal public health units were denied more powers, which means they cannot impose more onerous bylaws.

Next steps
Restaurants Canada will consult with the government on regulations. We will call for a program  that allows you to get menu and menu board pre-approval in those discussions.
