(Nov. 23/15) Restaurants Canada met with the Canadian Dairy Commission (CDC) last week for our annual price consultation on the cost of secondary milk products, such as cheese, yogurt, butter and ice cream. CDC is the crown corporation that sets the price of dairy products under Canada’s supply management system.

Indications are that the CDC is planning a price increase for 2016. We held them to a price decrease in 2015 – their first in 23 years – and we will keep negotiating on your behalf to hold any proposed increase to a minimum.

We did agree on the success of the discounts offered to members on mozzarella cheese used to make pizza, known as Class 3-D cheese. We will continue our attempts to broaden this discount so it applies to other menu items that contain mozzarella, and to other cheese for pizza.

The 2016 price announcement is expected in mid-December and we expect it to take effect in February, 2016.
