(Feb. 19/16) Last fall, Restaurants Canada published the Raise the Bar report card, which graded the provincial liquor systems across the country. Our goal was to urge the provinces to offer you better pricing, selection and distribution.

Quebec scored a mediocre C+, in part because the SAQ has a monopoly on sales of wine and spirits to bar owners, and doesn’t offer volume rebates.

Although there’s still room for improvement, our advocacy has led to a recent win in Quebec. Starting in April, bar and restaurant owners will be eligible for a promotion program run by SAQ. They’ll offer 13 promotions throughout the next year, each featuring a selection of 10 to 15 products. Every promotion will be different. All permit holders will be notified by email when a new promotion is announced, and you will also be advised when you pick up your orders.

The SAQ has indicated they may offer this deal again in future years, as long as sales to bar and restaurant owners increase by $2 million over the first year.
