Canada’s commercial foodservice sales moderated to 3.1% growth in April. The slowdown in spending was largely due to inclement weather. According to Statistics Canada, colder than normal spring temperatures and an ice storm affecting Central and Eastern Canada may have contributed to decreased sales.
Adjusted for menu inflation of 4.5%, real foodservice sales fell by 1.3% in April following a 2.3% increase in March.
Looking ahead, while overall employment across all industries has stalled in recent months, average weekly wages are up by nearly 4% in the first five months of 2018. This is double the average annual growth of the past five years. This will help support higher foodservice sales overall, but rising menu prices will restrain traffic.
