Commercial foodservice sales plummet 34.2% in February 2021

Total commercial foodservice sales in Canada were 34.2% lower in February compared to February 2020. This drop represents a $2 billion loss in sales compared to February 2020. 

All segments reported lower sales in February. Sales at quick-service restaurants declined by 13.3% in February, following a 12.3% drop in January.  Meanwhile, sales at full-service restaurants plummeted by 47.7% in February due to steep decline of 57% in both Ontario and Quebec.  Drinking places and caterers remain the hardest-hit segments as revenues tumbled by 64.9% and 57.1% respectively.   

At the provincial level, provinces with fewer cases of COVID-19 in February reported smaller declines in sales compared to the rest of the country.  On Prince Edward Island, foodservice sales fell by 11.4% as quick-service restaurant sales dipped by 0.5% compared to the national average of -13.3%.  In contrast, foodservice sales in Quebec fell by 42.7% in February with steep declines at full-service restaurants (-57%) and drinking places (-85%).
