Foodservice employment dips in December

Publié janvier 11, 2022

According to the latest Labour Force Survey data from Statistics Canada, employment in the restaurant and accommodation industry dipped by 3,700 jobs in December compared to November. While there was little change across most provinces, British Columbia reported the largest job losses (-6,700) due to inclement weather.

Overall, 1,015,500 Canadians were employed in the restaurant and accommodation in December 2021, an increase of 103,200 over December 2020. Still, employment remains more than 200,000 jobs below pre-pandemic levels. Given the recent lockdowns in many parts of the country, the January 2022 data are expected to show a steep drop in employment.

Also just released by Statistics Canada are the latest October foodservice sales data, which can be found here in our latest Monthly Fast Facts.
