Foodservice employment shows modest improvement in February

Publié mars 12, 2021

Employment in Canada’s foodservice and accommodation industry rose by 65,000 jobs in February 2021 compared to January, according to the latest data from Statistics Canada.  The increase in employment in February follows four consecutive months of declines when the industry shed more than 200,000 jobs due to stricter containment measures across the country.

While employment increased modestly, 64,000 foodservice and accommodation employees did not work any hours in February.

Despite the increase, employment in the foodservice industry remains 319,000 jobs below pre-COVID-19 levels. This represents more lost jobs than the combined job losses of the next three major industries (wholesale and retail trade; information, culture and recreation; and business, building and other support services).

At the provincial level, employment in the foodservice and accommodation industry in Ontario rose by 34,900 jobs in February, but remains, 121,900 below pre-COVID-19 levels.  Employment also rose in Alberta (+19,200) and Quebec (+7,700).

In contrast, the provincial shutdown in Newfoundland and Labrador led to the loss of 3,500 jobs in the province in Februrary. This represents the largest monthly decline in employment for the province since Statistics Canada began publishing the Labour Force Survey data in 1976.
