Foodservice sales in Canada slip again in May

Publié juillet 28, 2021

Following a steep decline in April, seasonally adjusted commercial foodservice sales in Canada fell by another 0.6% in May.  As a result, May foodservice sales were 32.4% below pre-pandemic levels due to the continued impact of the third wave. By segment, sales at quick-service restaurants were down 7.5% in May compared to February 2020, while full-service restaurants were down by 50.6%. Drinking places remain the hardest-hit segment as sales were down by a staggering 64.6%.

In May, foodservice sales in Nova Scotia plummeted by 22.3% compared to April due to a province-wide lockdown that closed non-essential indoor services.  Since the start of the pandemic, foodservice sales in Nova Scotia have declined by 32.7%.  Due to the lengthy shutdown of on-premise indoor dining at restaurants in Ontario, foodservice sales in May were 38.7% below pre-pandemic levels.
