Dec. 3/17: The B.C. government’s announcement to appoint respected lawyer Mark Hicken as a liquor policy advisor to Minister Eby coincided with Restaurants Canada’s “Raise the Bar” liquor report card.
Hicken will be responsible for creating a liquor panel aiming to modify and streamline regulations to support various liquor industry stakeholders early in the New Year. Restaurants Canada welcomed the appointment as Hicken advocated for Restaurants Canada liquor policy recommendations in the past, including the need for licensee wholesale pricing.
B.C. members are also encouraged to provide input into a Liquor Control and Licensing Branch (LCLB) review of food primary naming policy. In the past, members voiced concerns over this policy, which for example, restricted the use of “Bar” in a food primary licensed establishment name. LCLB asked Restaurants Canada to provide comments regarding LCLB food primary consultation paper by December 15. Please provide any input you have on this policy issue and your preferred consultation option by December 1 to Mark von Schellwitz, Vice President, Western Canada at firstname.lastname@example.org.
