Should restaurants have Naloxone kits?

Published March 14, 2018

On March 12, Global News Saskatchewan approached Restaurants Canada for comment on industry standards around Naloxone kits.

Naloxone is a drug that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose.

As a public safety issue, Restaurants Canada and our members are following the leadership of government and the first responders who are trained in the safe administration of Naloxone. Having the proper tools for those in need of immediate help is a good idea, but it is imperative that any and all organizations who do carry Naloxone kits have their staff members trained by medical professionals so they know and understand how to use and administer them properly.

Restaurants Canada supports members who choose to stock such a kit, but it is an operational issue and it is up to individual restaurant owners to decide how to proceed. We encourage members to look into the process, and ensure their staff are trained by medical professionals should they opt to invest in these kits.
