Restaurants Canada is urging all members of parliament to support a private member’s bill sponsored by Liberal MP Linda Lapointe, which would place a cap on fees charged to you by credit card companies. Note that the bill does not specify the fee limits, which would be set by regulation once passed.

In a recent meeting with Mme Lapointe, we thanked her for taking a leadership position on this important issue, and promised to rally industry support for the bill.

This spring, we’ve been talking to MPs about credit card interchange fees, which are among the highest in the world, and urging them to vote for the bill. These fees were also a key topic when we spoke to members of the Standing Committee on Finance in May. Restaurants have been hit hard by rising interchange fees that are charged on the bill as well as tax and tip.

What can you do? Tell your member of parliament this matters to you!

We expect the bill to be voted on this fall. In the coming weeks, we’ll give you the information you need to tell your MP that credit card acceptance fees are too high.
