New Ontario Employment Standards Act changes regarding equal pay for part-time and full-time workers came into effect on April 1.
These changes stem from Bill 148’s labour updates. The law now states that that part-time, seasonal or casual employees are entitled to be paid the same wage rate as “comparable” full-time employees. For restaurants and operations with tipped employees, the legislation only affects “rate of pay” and not tips.
Wages can only be based on:
Seniority system
Merit system
Quantity/ Quality of production
Other objective factors (other than sex)
