(Apr. 4/16) – The 2016 federal budget overlooked a key pledge made by the government to launch an EI youth hires program beginning this year. Both the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour were mandated “to provide a 12-month break on EI premiums for firms that hire new younger workers into permanent positions in 2016, 2017, and 2018.” Restaurants Canada wrote both ministers to express our disappointment that the budget was missing this key ingredient, and to suggest a long-term initiative to create more jobs for young people.
Canada’s restaurants industry is the No. 1 source of first jobs, and provides one in five jobs for young people under the age of 25.
