Foodservice sales plummet in April from third wave

Published juin 28, 2021

The third wave led to an 11.7% decline in commercial foodservice sales in April 2021 compared to March 2021 when adjusted for seasonality. This marks the lowest monthly sales since January 2021. While all segments reported lower sales, the largest declines were felt by drinking places (-22.0%) and full-service restaurants (-21.3%). Meanwhile, quick-service restaurants reported a 4.5% decline compared to March.

On a year-over-year basis, foodservice sales in Canada rose by 75% in April 2021 compared to April 2020. Still, overall sales remain 29.7% below April 2019 levels. Ontario has the longest road to recovery as sales were 36.5% below April 2019 levels. In contrast, overall commercial foodservice sales on Prince Edward Island were 4.6% greater in April 2021 compared to April 2019 as higher sales at quick-service restaurants offset lower sales at full-service restaurants, caterers and drinking places.
