Restaurants Canada has facilitated the creation of sector specific training partnerships between restaurants and service partners. These programs partner with restaurants to provide guidance and advice on the core competencies needed for skilled kitchen positions. We encourage you to connect with a program in your community to access recruitment support for your kitchen positions. Services offered by the programs listed are free of charge.

Ontario

London Training Centre’s Local Food Skills program provides employee candidates with elementary food skills for positions in quick service and full-service restaurant kitchens and can be adapted to provide other skills or enhanced training in specific competencies.  Subsidies may also be available for training costs and work placements. The program is currently partnered with Yasmine’s Authentic Lebanese Cuisine.

Participants receive training in the following core competencies: Cooking and Service Methodologies, Knife Skills, Steps of Service, Beverage Alcohol Service, Food Safety, Kitchen Equipment, Kitchen Health & Safety, Food Costs. Services are free for employers.

Participants successfully completing the program can receive certification in the following: Worker Health & Safety Awareness, Safe Food Handling, Customer Service, WHMIS 2015, Smart Serve.

Dixon Hall’s Next Step: Culinary Horizons program provides participants with 12-weeks of hands-on learning in partnership with George Brown College’s Continuing Education Hospitality and Culinary Arts department. Through four courses at George Brown (including Culinary Arts 1, Knife Skills, etc), participants receive technical skills training to prepare for skilled kitchen positions in the the workplace. Dixon Hall provides soft skills training. Supplementary learning in theoretical training is also provided by George Brown, plus participants receive Food Handler’s certification.

Training for participants can be adapted or modified to address specific needs of restaurants recruiting from the program. Wage subsidies may be available when hiring participants. Services are free for employers.
